Why Everybody Is Selling their Retro Video Game Collections!

Collecting retro video games became very popular thanks to the Virtual Console, Xbox Live Arcade, Playstation Store, and because of youtubers like AVGN, but in 2019 a lot of people including myself seem to be sizing their collections down and I have a theory as to why.

  1. Honestly, I prefer original hardware but hate game collecting due to price/space needed. So the best solution for me was to use original hardware or if a console supports it backwards compatibility and use Everdrives and optical drive emulators so that I can get an authentic experience without spending a fortune on game collecting.

  2. I probably won't sell mine because i would probably regret it. But that emptiness is here. I mean, i don't play my games actually. I buy, the enjoyment is waiting for the game to arrive and put it in the shelf and never touch it again… I dont think i care about games anymore, i don't know if that's depression or anything, i just dont feel happy when i'm playing, i get bored very fast and when i start a game i can't wait to finish it and and put in the shelf again (some games i just rage and quit). It's strange. It's almost 100% certain that i would regret if i sold my game collection. I just dont care about them any more, i think this "pathetic" pleasure i have is just to have the collection growing. People don't even know i collect and i dont want people to know i have games ( i hate to share my games, so i prefer that people don't even know i have games). The only people that know i have games is just like 5 or 6 people (that includes my family of 3 people, lol). It's just boring. The pleasure is almost dead.

  4. Cam, StreetPass Mii Plaza is one of the best games of all time? Have you beaten Monster Manor? I cried. Same with Ultimate Angler. One day I hope we StreetPass!

  5. Hate to be this guy but…lot of stuff on eBay fairly cheap cuz quarantine. People gotta eat. I'm blessed I am employed and able to swoop on these deals. I've had to liquidate before so I feel for people.

  6. I have a collection, mostly games I have played at least a little bit, mostly cheap at the time of purchase. I'm only adding games that I really want now as space is becoming an issue. My collection is mostly discs as despite being old enough to remember when the Atari 2600 was exciting, I favour games from the ps1 era onwards. I have no desire to sell up at present.

  7. 6:40 YOU were the one who bought that VB collection in 2009! Damn you Cameron! I remember that auction, it was a VB system and mainly loose carts of all the games for an insane deal. I woke up an hour late that day and just missed that auction. Took me almost a decade later to complete my collection. You barely won that thing, consider yourself lucky.

  9. That is so true these games are fun but that’s usually for like 10 min then I get tired it’s fun to collect things I like

  10. I'm not intentionally trying to collect. Just buy what I want to play. If it sucks then I'll just get rid of it. Waste of space.

  11. As my friend told me, keep the games you know you'll never grow tired of. I followed when collecting psp games and only getting the ones I love

  16. I started collecting like 3 years ago and I still have a huge interest. I have a good amount of systems and a local retro game store has great deals so I don’t plan on slowing down or selling soon.

  17. Tour logic doesn't make sense. It's like why buy and drive a Ferrari when a Honda accord could take from point A to point B as well… Not everyone was meant to have certain stuff in life. If you can afford the hobby due to space or cash you are more than welcome to leaved is your right.

  18. while actively collecting i stumbled upon a lot of retro game boxes and manuals on craigslist for fifty bucks. im talking SNES NES GBC 64 etc… idk how many there were, 20? 30? (pokemon, donkey kong etc) but i paid fifty bucks for it. in that lot was a box and manual for MGS gameboy color. i knew it was valuable so i ran out and spent probably 12 bucks on a loose cart. Long story short, im in a point in life where i'm ready to part with a good chunk of my collection and i currently have 7 ebay listings for about 900 dollars. collecting was a HUGE part of my life but i always knew in the back of my mind that there would come a day where i would be willing to sell and i would reap the benefits of hitting the pavement every week at garage sales and thrift stores and craigslist. i cant believe i have a 200 dollar game i essentially paid 12 bucks for. thats what its all about, that one great find you got that one time.

  19. I wouldn't sell my collection, I collect from the 5th generation and up and these early 3D consoles don't emulate too well, and I love lightgun shooters and have a dedicated tube TV for it.

  21. I’ve also noticed a lot of ppl are selling off collections especially NES and SNES. Also noticed some of those games are dropping in price…. not saying that’s the reason maybe the flux of games coming back into the market are the reasons they are dropping, who knows? Nice vid, gives me lots to think about

  22. I currently have almost 400 games in my collection with only 100 games on my "wish list". I try to only buy only games I'm genuinely interested in.

  23. One of the worst things about collecting the originals is that the original consoles stop working suddenly these days.
